The Invisibility of Habit

In research estimates, fully 43% of everyday actions are habitual. This is surprising. In experience, most of our actions seem like choices we make, not responses driven by cues. In this talk, I will show how people overlook habit forces in their lives and then discuss the consequences for everyday self-change and self-control.

Wendy Wood, author of Good Habits, Bad Habits (Habit Weekly’s Best Book of 2020), is Provost Professor of Psychology and Business at the University of Southern California. For the past 30 years, her research has addressed the nature of habits and what makes them so hard to change. Her work identifies basic psychological principles of habit formation and change and applies them to everyday life challenges. She has published over 100 articles in scientific journals and her work has received numerous recognitions, most recently the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in Attitudes and Social Influence. She has collaborated on research with industry partners such as P&G, along with agencies like the World Bank and CDC, and, driven by her graduate students, helps to host the monthly TA-DAH! series of talks.
